Dr. Michael Austin to be keynote speaker at Phd Spring Symposium
Dr. Michael J. Austin

April 8, 2008 -  Dr. Michael J. Austin, a nationally recognized expert on nonprofit management, will be the keynote speaker for the 12th annual Indiana University School of Social Work’s PhD Spring Symposium on April 24th.

Dr. Austin, the former dean of the University of Pennsylvania School of Social Work, teaches graduate students in the area of agency administration and community planning at the University of California, Berkeley, where he is the Milton and Florence Krenz Mack Distinguished Professor of Nonprofit Management.

Dr. Austin also is the director of the Mack Center on Nonprofit Management in Human Services, which was established at UC, Berkeley in 2006 by the Milton and Florence Krenz Mack Trust.

Dr. Austin has more than 40 years involvement as a consultant to a variety of nonprofit organizations, helping them with issues such as strategic planning, organizational restructuring, program evaluation and marketing.

The focus of this year’s symposium is developing university-community partnerships to improve the management and operations of non-profit organizations. The symposium will also showcase the ongoing work of IU School of Social Work PhD students. It starts at 8:30 a.m. in the Commons on the fourth floor of the School of Social Work building.

Dr. Austin’s presentation will highlight the methods and findings of cutting edge research. His talk, entitled, “Building Organizational Support for Evidence-informed Practice,” will feature 20 years of experience of the Bay Area Social Services Consortium, of which he is staff director.

BASSC is an entity that includes 12 San Francisco Bay Area county social service directors, four deans of social work and 12 foundation representatives. It focuses on training, applied action research projects in social service agencies and policy and program analysis among other things.

Besides a PhD in organizational research related to nonprofit human service organizations he earned from the University of Pittsburgh in 1970, he holds two master degrees, one in community organizing and social service administration from the UC, Berkeley (1966) and the other in public health administration from the University of Pittsburgh(1969).

He has taught at the Florida State University, the University of Washington and the University of Pennsylvania.

Dr. Austin has also served as a management consultant to local, state, federal and international agencies and is the author and co-author of 17 books in the area of human service administration, over 80 articles and 40 chapters and technical reports.

Registration for the symposium opens at 8:30 a.m. The work of PhD students will be on display at 9 a.m. Dr. Austin is scheduled to speak shortly after 10 a.m.
