What is Social Work and what do Social Workers Do?

The National Association of Social Workers (NASW) states that the primary mission of the profession is to enhance human well-being and help meet the basic needs of all people, with particular attention to the needs and empowerment of people who are vulnerable, oppressed, and living in poverty (NASW, 1999, p.1). There is a wide range of tasks associated with the social work profession. Social Workers can do any of the following, plus more:
  • Instruct parenting classes
  • Create resources for child care
  • Navigate a family through divorce
  • Build relationships between school and family
  • Teach communication skills
  • Lead anger control groups
  • Counsel people with addictions
  • Ensure accessibility for people with disabilities
  • Advocate for community resources
Careers in Social Work Can Happen in These Areas:

How Much Money do Social Workers Make?

Median annual earnings of child, family, and school social workers were $31,470 in 2000. The middle 50 percent earned between $24,910 and $40,170. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $20,120, and the top 10 percent earned more than $50,280. (According to the Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2002-03 Edition)
