Professional Supervision

Overview of the Service: Social Work practitioners seek professional supervision for a variety of reasons including but not limited to: meeting licensure requirements, increasing professional development and for consultation with practice issues involving ethical situations or dilemmas.

The Indiana University School of Social Work is invested in the ongoing professional development of social workers; therefore the school is proud to offer a linkage service that facilitates connecting social workers seeking professional supervision to social workers providing professional supervision. Our goal is to host an information exchange service that is a resource to those wanting to provide or receive professional social work supervision. Our professional supervision resource list includes both volunteer and fee for service professionals.

What is professional or clinical supervision in social work?
The Encyclopedia of Social Work defines professional social work supervision as "educational process in which a person with a certain equipment or skill takes the responsibility for training a person with less equipment or skill".

"Supervised practice experience" means experience gained under the supervision of a licensed social worker. Usually consists of one hour per week for a minimum of 2-3 years post degree.

There are several areas or levels of supervision that may be of interest to you. Our Professional Supervision Resource List includes supervision resources for those working toward certification as a LSW (for BSW's and entry-level MSW's), those working toward certification as an LCSW ("clinical"- track MSW's), and social workers seeking supervision for their practice including generalist practice, clinical practice, mental health, school-based practice, medical-based practice, addictions, etc.
