4th Annual Mental Health Conference

The 4th Annual Social Work Mental Health Conference, conference, hosted by the Indiana University School of Social Work Alumni Association, was held on Friday, March 4, 2005 at the Marten House Hotel and Conference Center in Indianapolis. Over 200 alumni attended the conference.

The conference titled, “What Social Workers Need to Know:  2005 Update.  Mental Health, Psychopharmacology, Violence, and Other Topics”, featured a keynote address by Sally Mason who serves as the Director of Programs at the Sojourner Center in Arizona.  Sally has beenworking in the field of human services for 19 years and has extensive experience in providing and managing intervention and support services for victims of many aspects of violence.

The conference keynote explored the impact of violence on various aspects of our communities – work place, intimate partnerships, schools, youth, substance use, mental health, and the general sense of connectedness in our society. An experiential component was included.A few of the other presenters for the conference breakout sessions included: Rhonda Arrick, Director of Clinical Services at the Legacy House, who presented a workshop titled "After the Violence".  Dr. Bob Bennett from the IU School of Social Work presented on adolescent sex offenders and Dr. David Wagner from the Roudebush VA Medical Center discussed the effects of medications in the treatment of violent disorders and other conditions.

Registration for the 5th Annual Mental health Conference will be mailed in early January. The conference is an excellent way to spend the day with social work colleagues and to earn the 6 continuing education credits that will be granted to conference attendees. Please contact Karen Deery at 317-274-8959 for more information. We hope to see you there.
